
Town Budget Process
January: Assessor creates the Grand List

January: Budget requests from town offices and departments are due to the Board of Selectmen. Budget request from the Superintendent is due to the Board of Education.

Feb - March: Board of Selectmen and Board of Education present their budgets to the Board of Finance.

April: Board of Finance Public Hearing: First Tuesday in April. Itemized budget estimates are presented to the public. The public can comment on what expenditures they wish to be included in the budget.

May: Town Meeting: Usually the first or second Tuesday in May. Proposed budget presented to the public as it will be voted on the following week. Other issues may also be on the agenda.

May: Budget Referendum (vote by ballot like an election): May 20, 2025. Voters must approve the budget, or it goes back to be changed and then voted on again. The town does not have a budget until it is approved by voters at referendum.
​
June: Tax collector prints tax bills.
​
July 1st: Start of Fiscal Year (as in FY 25-26).
